Talking with Liz, one gets an uncanny sense that horticulture is in the family genes. Born to Dutch parents, her family's roots in the industry stem back to at least two great grandfathers, both tulip bulb cultivators in Holland.
Her grandfathers were also horticulturists, as well as her father, a nursery owner and landscaper. Three uncles in Sweden are independently retired from the flower trade in and around Stockholm, and a cousin in Holland exports flowers. Another cousin in the states is a florist, not to mention more distant relatives also involved with flowers.
Holland, in fact, has a long and important history in the flower trade, its cool damp coastal climate being a grower's paradise. During the time Liz lived there as a child, it made a lasting impression on her. Across the canal behind her grandparent's backyard, acres upon acres of blooming cultivated tulips filled the air with their sweet scent, to this day ranking among her favorite scents.
Liz spent many hours with her dear Grandpa (her "Opa", as the Dutch say), riding bicycles through the fields of tulips and freesia, learning, and developing a deep passion for flowers. Later, in the United States, Liz would go on to Cobleskill College, known for its horticultural programs, to earn a degree with honors in Nursery Management.
Today, with more than twenty five years experience in the floral business and countless satisfied customers, Liz still brings the same great passion to her work. To her, flowers are a little bit like children, to be nurtured, treasured, and understood. Flowers by Liz hopes to make your special occasions all the more special through the art of caring creative floral design.
